How often to water tomato plants in August
August is when tomato plants are at their thirstiest and most vulnerable. A dry day followed by a soaking can split ripening fruit overnight. The trick is consistency: little and often is the opposite of what they want.
Water deeply, not daily
Aim for 2–3 litres per plant, two or three times a week in normal heat. This encourages deep roots and steady fruit development. Daily sprinkles keep roots shallow and fruit prone to splitting.
Keep the leaves dry
Wet tomato foliage is an invitation to blight. Water at the base, ideally through a dripline or a careful can, and never in the evening when leaves will stay damp overnight.
Mulch to hold moisture
A 5cm layer of compost or straw around the base keeps soil cool and moist for longer. It also stops water splashing soil-borne disease onto lower leaves.
