How long to water a new lawn UK

A new lawn is a terrible thing to lose to a hot spell. The roots are shallow, the soil is loose, and a single missed watering can leave permanent brown patches. The good news is that the watering schedule is simple.

First two weeks: keep the top moist

New turf needs the soil underneath kept damp until roots grip. Water daily for 10–15 minutes in the early morning, more if the weather is hot and windy.

Weeks three and four: deepen the soak

Once roots start to anchor, reduce frequency to every other day but increase depth. You want to train roots to chase water downwards rather than stay on the surface.

After a month: taper off

By week five, most UK lawns can manage on rainfall alone. Water only during dry spells. Established lawns are surprisingly resilient and often recover fully after dormancy.

The takeaway

New lawns need pampering for a month, then they want you to back off. Overwatering an established lawn is one of the commonest wastes of water in a British garden.
