How to keep plants watered while on holiday
A fortnight away in August can undo a season of careful growing. Neighbours forget, trays run dry, and the weather can turn hot without warning. The only truly reliable answer is a system that does not need you to be there.
Short breaks: saucers and mulch
For a long weekend, move pots to shade, water thoroughly and stand them in saucers. A 5cm mulch on beds will buy you a few extra days by slowing evaporation.
Medium breaks: bottle wicks and timers
For a week, inverted bottles and capillary mats help containers. On taps, a simple battery timer can run a hose for set periods — though it still waters blindly, not by need.
Long breaks: dripline + tap timer
For two weeks or more, a pressure-compensated dripline on a digital timer is the only method that delivers the right amount, at the roots, every day, without human memory.
The takeaway
The best holiday watering strategy is the one you set before you leave and forget until you return.
