Autumn lawn care in the UK.
September is the best month to repair your lawn. Soil is still warm, rain is returning and grass has time to recover before winter. Here is the exact order to do the jobs, and when to switch off watering for the year.
The five autumn lawn jobs
1. Raise the mower blade
Cut at 4–5cm for the last few mows of the year. Shorter grass weakens the plant and lets weeds and moss in over winter. Never remove more than a third of the blade height in one cut.
2. Scarify
Rake out moss, dead grass and thatch with a spring-tine rake or a powered scarifier. Mid-September to mid-October is the window — the lawn will look dreadful for two weeks, then recover strongly.
3. Aerate
Push a garden fork into compacted areas every 15cm, or hire a hollow-tine aerator for large lawns. The holes let air, water and feed reach the roots. Brush sharp sand or compost into the holes if drainage is poor.
4. Overseed
Sow hard-wearing grass seed at 25–35g per square metre after scarifying. Rake lightly so seed touches soil, then keep the surface damp for 10–14 days. A fine dripline or sprinkler run twice daily is enough.
5. Feed with autumn lawn food
Use a low-nitrogen, high-potassium autumn feed — not spring feed — to toughen roots and improve winter colour. Apply to damp grass after rain, or water it in gently.
When to stop watering the lawn in autumn
Once daytime temperatures drop consistently below 15°C and rain returns, grass growth slows and evaporation falls. From mid-October onwards you can usually stop irrigating entirely. If you overseed, keep the top 2cm damp for two weeks, then let natural rainfall take over.
A timer-controlled dripline or lawn sprinkler system should be drained and shut off before the first frost to protect valves and pipework.
Watering calendar for the rest of the year
Spring
Light, frequent watering only if rain is absent. Feed in April and start mowing regularly.
Summer
Deep soak once a week in dry spells. Grass can brown and still recover — focus water on borders and vegetables instead.
Autumn
Scarify, aerate, overseed and feed. Water only to establish new seed, then stop.
Winter
No watering needed. Keep off waterlogged grass and let frost do the natural work of killing weeds.
